Calgary Stampede - Fran's Fun Days Out

Calgary Stampede & Exhibition

No trip to Calgary would be complete without attending the Calgary Stampede billed as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.  This annual event beginning the first Friday in July is a wonderful celebration of the western spirit that makes the city so unique.  The 10-day show provides hours of fun for the whole family.  It all kicks off with a vibrant parade through the city streets (although there is a Sneak a Peek night for those who just cannot wait to don their Stetson!).

We loved watching the 1,000+ horses trot past us with Calgary Stampede Queens, First Nations and RCMP atop (unfortunately that did mean there was quite a bit of manure but don’t let that put you off!!!).  Family Day is on the first Sunday when admission is free for early birds and if you are one of the first few hundred through the gate, you can also get a free pancake breakfast (although queuing for an hour for food did seem a little desperate!!).

Wednesday is Kids Day with a variety of entertaining shows to keep them amused all day long.  And of course, the Grandstand offers chuck wagon racing and rodeo riding (but you have to pay extra to attend these events and personally we have never actually made it into the MAIN ARENA – too busy watching everything else going on!).

Parking is available near the ground but expect to wait for a while (or leave your husband to park and go in without him!).  The C-Train stops right outside the ground and is a much better and easier way to get there.  Tickets are available before the event and eagle eyes should look out for special offers on well-known products in the stores.  For more information you can go to http://cs.calgarystampede.com
